Your UX Team has a variety of personalities and skill levels, some likely more skilled than you, their mentor or manager. Your team members want to improve their skills, gain new insights, and become more effective in their roles. How do you coach team members to continue learning and development?

Foster a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that individuals can learn and develop skills through effort and persistence. Encourage individual members to embrace challenges as a way to grow and view mis-steps as learning opportunities. Provide positive reinforcement when people demonstrate a growth mindset. Be a role model by embracing a growth mindset yourself.

Facilitate Goals Setting — a Game Changer

Collaborate with individual team members to set meaningful, custom, professional goals. Their goals should align with specific, measurable career aspirations. Through goal-setting, you help team members focus efforts and measure progress over time, a game changer for career growth and personal success.

Celebrating goals, learnings, and accomplishments can be as simple as a meaningful text.

Encourage Learning and Development

Learning and development (L&D) is essential for any professional to stay current and improve skills. HBR states L&D is a competitive differentiator. Encourage your team members to take advantage of conferences, workshops, and online courses. Provide opportunities for on-the-job learning and mentorship. Make time for them to apply and share what they’ve learned.

Provide Constructive Feedback

Feedback is essential for recognizing one’s strengths and to facilitate growth personally and professionally. Set the example by asking for and receiving feedback in humility and with appreciation. While always encouraging team members to lead with strengths, when needed, help them identify areas needing improvement. Be encouraging, constructively focusing on specific behaviors or actions. Encourage your team member to ask questions and seek clarification. Set the example by doing the same when you ask for feedback.

Celebrate Achievements

Build morale and celebrate when team members achieve goals or make progress. Recognize members of your team when they demonstrate positive behaviors like collaboration, innovation, or creativity. Celebrations don’t have to be extravagant; even a simple thank you or recognition in a team meeting can be meaningful.

Coaching is a critical part of encouraging learning and development. By fostering a growth mindset, setting clear goals, encouraging learning and development, providing constructive feedback, and celebrating achievements, you help team members improve their skills, gain new insights, become more effective in their roles, and make meaningful contributions personally and professionally.
